Newmark Hotels (Pty) Ltd., an established brand within the Ambassador Group of Hotels, has invested in fibre optic technology as part of a large-scale inter-site connectivity project across its network.
The company partnered with Integr8, South Africa’s largest privately owned ICT managed services provider, to acquire fibre optic technology service and support to connect a number of its sites, including the V& A Waterfront, onto a single LAN.
“One of the main objectives was to assist our client with the challenge of having to handle additional recurring costs in order to service all sites independently. We also wanted to assist with regard to speeding up Internet connectivity for guests at the hotels,” explains Robert Sussman, joint CEO, Integr8.
Integr8 made use of existing fibre routes already in place throughout the V&A Waterfront in order to connect Newmark Hotels, The V&A Hotel, Dockhouse Boutique Hotel & Spa as well as The Queen Victoria hotel as part of a single Wide Area Network using fibre optic cabling.
All fibre connections terminate at the Queen Victoria Hotel using high-end Cisco equipment. Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) were put in to place for each site and its applicable services (i.e. VoIP on one VLAN, PMS on one VLAN, BackOffice on one VLAN).
“This solution represents a substantial benefit to our client because it eliminates additional monthly costs, and guests now have the advantage of increased access speeds with Internet connectivity. There is also an improvement in LAN connectivity and redundancy, with an additional wireless bridge in place to ensure that there is no disruption to connectivity should the fibre network fail,” Sussman continues.
According to Sussman a combination of increased access to technology, lower costs and increased capacity of solutions has meant that infrastructure is accessible to a wider market.
“The hospitality industry continues to grow from strength to strength, due in part to ongoing consumer demand and the role of technology. Operators in this sector know that communication technology and connectivity is now an expected service and this must be in place in order to compete. We are proud of our association with Newmark Hotels and we look forward to long and prosperous relationship going forward,” says Sussman.
